Dr. Atkins's diet is extremely low in carbohydrates, which helps to regulate insulin production and decrease circulating insulin; less insulin soon results in less fat storage and fewer food cravings. The diet is far from torturous, though--those who've tried it attest that hunger is not a part of this plan. Ninety percent of Dr. Atkins's patients--more than 25,000 of them--have experienced dramatic weight loss. The book includes recipes for such luscious, low-carb dishes as lobster soup, zabaglione, sea bass, and blueberry ice cream, and even includes a carbohydrate gram counter and menus.

I personally would rather a straight forward "DO THIS" approach, rather than all the explanations and history of this diet. I think a book on "why" and a book on "how" would have set me in the right direction much sooner. Over all good book however.

Im not into long reviews. I don't like reading long reviews myself so I wont bore you. I tried the diet and it worked. In the first two weeks alone I lost 20 pounds without exercise. In 6 months I lost 70 pounds. I put other friends on it and they had similar results. It's now 5 years since I went on Atkins and Im still thin and energetic. Im 40 years old and look as if Im in my late 20's. (A by-product of the glutathione and other vitamins found naturally in beef). It works and its as simple as that.

There are about eight or so scientific studies published so far, which demonstrate the effectiveness of the Atkins diet and its superiority to other diets with respect to the speed and amount of weight loss. The markers of cardiovascular health are also IMPROVED by this diet. Bad cholesterol and total cholesterol are reduced to normal levels by the Atkins diet. These scientific results fly in the face of the traditional dietary advice to avoid saturated fat and to avoid dietary cholesterol. The latest science shows that dietary fat does not cause obesity and dietary cholesterol has no effect on blood cholesterol (the latter is synthesized in the liver).
The extremely low-carb regimen does not have to be maintained after the desired results have been achieved and Robert Atkins advises adding limited amounts of various carbohydrate-rich foods to your day-to-day diet.
My advice to Atkins followers is to avoid meat and fat cooked at high temperatures (frying, grilling, baking, roasting, etc) because they contain detectable levels of carcinogens and high levels of cholesterol oxidation products. If you use boiled or steamed meat (moderate cooking temperature), you will eliminate those undesirable chemicals from your diet and you will also feel much better.
