This is no doubt a good book for someone who wants an in depth learning experience. However, I wanted a quick way to learn this program to get up and running. This is not the book for that. Over 1000 pages.

Disclaimer:
I already knew a little bit about Macromedia Dreamweaver MX 2004. So, I already had a small idea of the interface, however, I was not utilizing any CSS or half of the features included I realized through reading this book. I was still typing the HTML code... the hard way. Since using this book, I've been able to create better websites with more flair and with few headaches. Practice makes perfect, so don't expect the book to make you magically the best website designer in the universe after the first 3 chapters. However, if you follow the tutorials from beginning to end you'll have a much more thorough understanding of Dreamweaver CS4 and all the power it holds.
My choice came down to this book or the Dummies book. I've been a devout Dummies follower for many years, but always felt they skipped around a little too much for my liking and sometimes would expect you to already know certain aspects of any given program. This book assumes you know nothing and provides much detail when explaining how to do certain things. After using this book, CSS is easy w/ Dreamweaver CS4. It worked for me.
Very good tutorial book.

This is a great resource, but there lengthy and at times wordy. A great supplemental resource to online tutorials and/or classes.

I've been using pc's since 1980. I've purchased a lot of software manuals. Nowadays it's ridiculous - you drop $1200 on a piece of software and it includes no manual, no quick help guide, nothing. Adobe oughta be ashamed of itself. It wastes $$ on fancy packaging, but doesn't invest a dime to provide a manual for its software. This business about "looking it up online" in a help system is bogus. You don't learn how to use software that way. You need a book you can leaf through, exploring topics. And I believe a software publisher absolutely has an obligation to deliver a complete manual with its product.
That said, McFarland's book about Dreamweaver is easily the best written, best organized, most helpful manual I've ever bought or read. Don't try to use Dreamweaver without it. It's all in here. I don't usually read an entire book like this because I don't need all of it - but I've been reading this thing for pleasure when I go to bed at night! I learn something new every time I crack it open. McFarland tells it clearly and completely. You can tell he's not just a writer - he's a "user." And he understands how users and programmers think about software. He anticipates your questions and delivers "how to" and "why" with intelligence and aplomb. He doesn't just show you how to use a feature; he teaches you techniques and how to approach tasks.
Now if he would only write a missing manual for every other piece of software I use... I'd buy it! Highly recommended!
Final note to Adobe: Just hire the guy to write your manuals and include them in the box and pay him handsomely. On the other hand, Adobe oughta just include a coupon for a copy of the book - that way McFarland won't have to omit any of the frank criticisms he shares about the software. My only request of him is that I wish the book would discuss more of the bugs in DW -- and DW is buggy.
