What a great story. While it may seem simply like a tale of unrequetted or delayed love, it is much more and is more enjoyable everytime I read it. After just a brief encounter, Florentino falls in love with Fermina when they are young, but she is forced to marry another, and Florentino thereafter pines after her until her husband, Dr. Juvenal Urbino dies and he can again declare his love to her. What happens to them between these times and the short story afterwards is what makes this story great. You'll find in the end an understanding of and have a deep feeling for all three characters.

I was really disappointed with this book. I could hardly get through it. The first 25-30 pages have little (if anything) to do with the rest of the book. I have to question what the point was of the first 10 or so pages. Also, I don't "buy" the kind of love that this book is about - that someone would wile away the greater part of his life waiting for and being in love with the same woman. Hey, there are "other fish in the sea" - most people eventually move on. And the bit about a man in his 60's having and affair with the 14-year-old girl that he was supposed to protect and be responsible for. And then dropping her when the 70-year-old he's loved for 50+ years becomes available. Yeah, right! Some of the description was beautiful but the entire plot doesn't represent "real life" at all. I wouldn't recommend this book to anyone!

Love in the time of Cholera is about the timeless and obsessive love of Florentino Ariza for Fermina Daza who once as youth had been star-crossed lovers. However, once Fermina is taken away from his side by her social climbing father, she maintains correspondence for years with Florentino. They plan a future together that soon disintegrates once she returns and realizes her mistake in believing the infatuation to be love. Fermina Daza soon throws herself into the arms of Dr. Juvenal Urbino, with whom she lives for the majority of her life until he is tragically killed in a fall at the beginning of their elderly stage. Florentino on the other hand suffers throughout life, seeking the comfort of over 600+ women in hopes of replacing Fermina Daza. It isn't until the death of Fermina's husband Dr. Urbino that Florentino had the capacity to enter Fermina's life once again. It is a love story often times tragic, gripping and revealing! I enjoyed the book throughout although it was partially spoiled due to the fact that I saw the movie adaptation a few years ago! I recommend both the movie and book, however read the book prior to watching the movie.

Bar None, this is the worst book I have ever read. I would have stopped reading after the first two chapters but this was my book club selection. I envisioned this book to be a love story. Make no mistake, there is nothing in this book about actual love. The quick plot: boy stalks girl, write love letters to each other, know nothing about each other, go separate ways, man carries torch for this girl for 50 years, and in the meantime... man has sex with anything that will take him including a child.
Usually, there is one character in a novel that the reader can identify with. You will identify with one of the main characters if you possess any of the following: You are a rapist, you are self absorbed, you take no responsibility for your actions, you molest children that you care for, you have hundreds of sexual partners with no protection, you have caused someones death, you are a stalker and you deeply resent your spouse. Otherwise, for the remainder of you, you will read every page asking yourself what the point is and hope that at the end maybe something substantial will happen. It won't happen. I encourage anyone that has the desire to read this book to spend that time instead cleaning the grout in your shower with a qtip. I promise you, it will be much more rewarding.

I read this book as part of my local book club it is boring and the main characters are uninspiring. It is so bad I wonder if the author genuinely thinks it is a love story because I cannot imagine any intelligent person calling this a love story. The main character is over-sexed and super-needy. Why don't we all write about the relationships of the mentally ill and call it love. That is what this book does.
